So, similar to Ikaruga, you are constantly switching back and forth between these two modes. They both seem to inflict about the same amount of damage but the laser will push back enemy lasers and protect you. You have two attacks – a wide shot that sprays bullets across the entire screen and a focused laser. While 90 percent of Dodonpachi Resurrection is dodging bullets, there are also a few buttons on the left side of the screen to keep in mind. The interface is well-designed, but the reality is that forever sliding my finger on the iPhone's screen just isn't as satisfying as slamming buttons and feverishly spinning a joystick.ĭodonpachi+Resurrection+is+nothing+short+of+gorgeous. There is a space at the bottom of the screen for your finger so that you don't obscure your view. Your ship will fire automatically, so it really becomes a game about dodging bullets. To adapt the formula to a touch screen, the controls have been somewhat simplified. Story does not matter here - all you have to do is shoot everything and avoid being hit yourself. This is an original Dodonpachi game with new bosses to battle and bullet patterns to memorize. Dodonpachi Resurrection may be as good a bullet hell shooter as we're likely to get on iPhone, but I still much prefer a joystick and those fat arcade buttons. Of course, the iPhone's touch screen controls are worlds different than an arcade joystick, so the experience isn't the same.
So imagine my excitement when I learned Dodonpachi Resurrection was coming to iPhone, a gaming platform I find myself spending more and more time with. The chunky cartoon art style, stunning bosses, and ridiculous amounts of bullets and lasers to dodge cause me to drop coin after coin into the cabinet on the rare occasion I run into Dodonpachi in the wild. I'm a huge fan of 2D shoot 'em ups (or shmups, if you will) and the arcade game Dodonpachi is probably my absolute favorite.
